2 August, 2024 – Action4Diabetes (A4D) launched their innovative online education program, HelloType1 for the Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) community in Myanmar. This platform empowers individuals through T1D education in their own language and culture, and connects them with a supportive community through HelloType1 Myanmar on Facebook.
The virtual event saw a turnout of 65 participants joining to lend support and learn more about this transformative initiative. A4D's Trustee and Volunteer Chief Medical Advisor, Prof May Ng OBE sharing her thoughts on the impact of HelloType1 as an award winning programme and value of T1D education in local language and culture. The other esteemed speakers, including Prof Ko Ko, Prof & Head of the Department of Endocrine and Metabolism at the University of Medicine (2), Yangon, and President of MSEM, highlighted the importance of spreading awareness about the platform. Prof Ko Ko emphasized, "We are trying to spread the information about the HelloType1 platform, especially HelloType1 Myanmar Facebook, to ensure everyone can access this programme."
Prof Myint Nilar, Prof & Head of the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Medicine, Taungyyi, provided key insights into the growing prevalence of Type 1 Diabetes. "The trend of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) in children globally is increasing by 3% to 4% annually, whereas T1D in Myanmar is at 532 patients according to the MSEM-CDIC report in June 2024," she noted.
The launch of HelloType1 in Burmese marks a significant step forward in providing much-needed resources and support to the T1D community in Myanmar, and we look forward to what A4D will continue to do in Myanmar and in the region.
