T1D Education & Empowerment: Strengthening T1D Care Through Camps in the Philippines

For many children and young people living with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), camp is more than just a few days away from home. It is an opportunity to learn, connect with others who share similar experiences, and build the confidence needed to navigate life with T1D.

In the last 2 months, Action4Diabetes (A4D) supported a series of T1D camps across the Philippines in partnership with local diabetes organisations, healthcare professionals, hospitals and volunteers. Together, these camps reached young people and families through a blend of diabetes education, practical skills development, peer support and fun-filled activities.

From Rainbow Camp in Pampanga to PSPME Camp in Cavite, Camp Adya in Rizal and Camp Cope in Batangas, participants took part in interactive learning sessions covering diabetes self-management, while also enjoying Amazing Race challenges, camp huddles, fellowship nights, creative activities, bonfires and team-building exercises.

While each camp had its own unique character, they shared a common goal: empowering young people with T1D to better understand their condition and live confidently with it.

Equally important were the partnerships that made these camps possible. By working alongside organisations such as PSPME and PCMC, as well as dedicated healthcare professionals and community volunteers, A4D continues to strengthen local capacity and create opportunities for children and young people with T1D to access education and support beyond the clinic setting. HelloType1 Philippines also serves as an important resource for T1D education and community engagement in the country.

A4D is especially grateful to the Helmsley Charitable Trust, whose support has been instrumental in expanding and strengthening T1D care programmes across the Philippines. Their commitment has enabled greater access to education, support and community-building opportunities for children and young people living with T1D.

As graduation ceremonies concluded and campers returned home, they carried with them more than memories. They left with new knowledge, stronger support networks and the confidence to take the next steps in their diabetes journey.

Together, through education, partnership and community, we are helping young people with T1D across the Philippines thrive.
